Since 1994, Chester Schools Christian Work has existed to demonstrate and share the love of God through promoting the personal and spiritual development of children and young people in Chester schools. During this time we have grown and developed our work; ensuring we are meeting the specific needs of pupils in our schools in the most effective way.

We would regularly reach around 9000 children and young people in some capacity each year, which is roughly half of the school population of Chester. We would love to see this grow until we are reaching all of them, Inspiring Hope for today and Unlocking Potential for tomorrow.

Meet our wonderful staff and trustees below and check out our ‘support us’ page for different ways you can become part of the CSCW family.

Darren Gerrish

Team Leader

My name is Darren and I have been based in the Chester area and involved in youthwork for over 20 years. I am passionate to see people develop to be all they were made to be and to have a positive impact on the people and the world around them.  In my previous roles, I have worked closely with CSCW and so was delighted to be appointed as Team Leader at the beginning of 2020.

From a young age, I have always loved participating in a variety of team sports but have hung up my various boots and welcomed the role of enthusiastic observer! The most energetic I get is frantically changing my Fantasy Teams as the deadline approaches! In recent years, I have found a love for ‘fair-weather’ cycling and have taken on a challenge each year to push myself and help raise funds for the valuable work of CSCW.

I am thrilled to continue to partner with so many organisations and individuals as we seek to Inspire HOPE and Unlock POTENTIAL in all we do.

Bec Benson

Adminstrator

Hi, I’m Bec.  I have spent the last 18 years teaching Religious Studies in a school in the local area.  Having had the privilege of working alongside CSCW in school for many years and sharing their passion for young people to know their value and worth, I was very excited by God’s prompting to join the team as their administrator.

When I am not busy teaching or busy in the office, I love nothing more than spending time with my husband and three children - whether that be visiting National Trusts or Alton Towers (which always seems to be in the rain), building Lego models or enjoying our Friday movie night.  On the rare occasion when I get some free time you will often find me with my head in a book and a bar of chocolate in my hand!

It is so wonderful to be part of the journey here at CSCW and I just can’t wait see what God has in store for us and the lives of the children and young people of Chester!

Andy Avery

Primary Schools Worker

Hi, I'm Andy and I'm the Primary Schools Worker for CSCW - I'm basically a big kid (growing older is inevitable, growing up isn’t!), which is why the Primary work suits me so well and has done for the 14 years I've been here.

When I'm not dressing up in strange costumes or making a fool of myself for God, then I love playing different musical instruments - take your pick from piano, guitar, bass, ukulele or mandolin (although not all at once!)  If I’m not playing music then you’re most likely to find me walking up a mountain, along a beach or borrowing a dog from a friend – I’m definitely an outside person!

Why do I do this job?  It’s simple really – why wouldn’t I want to take the opportunity to share the love of God with hundreds of people each week!  It’s the best job in the world!

Emma Roberts

Schools Worker

After spending the last nine years in youth ministry I still feel so privileged to have the opportunity to work with young people. I love that through working for CSCW I get to spend time each week speaking love, joy and peace into the lives of our young people especially through some of the most formative years of their lives.

Outside of schools work, I spend a lot of my time writing, creating or visiting theatres and I love to feel inspired by new writing, especially by local people writing about the places they love! If I’m not in the world of theatre I am probably found paddle boarding down the river or at the beach. All of this should be accompanied by a good coffee and a slice of gluten free cake of course (always happy to be an expert tester!)

I am excited about what God is doing and will continue to do through CSCW and to see the creativity He has placed in each one of us released in young people across our city.
